Miss New Year (or Мисс Новый год) is a Russian short film put in December of 1991, produced by Soyuzmultfilm.

Synopsis[]

It's New Year's Eve in the Forest, and almost all the animals are busy staging a unisex beauty contest in which the winner is to be determined by a state of the art super computer, everyone is excited, including a dumb yet strong Bear, a lazy and tech obsessed Wolf who just wants to be apart of things, and a beautiful Vixen who considers entering. Meanwhile, a mother Raven tells her Crow daughter that she should enter as well, but Crow doesn't want to, because she thinks she's ugly, however the mother swears that she'll win because she is computer savvy, what she means by this goes over her young one's head.

And so after a few dud performances which the computer lowly scores, the Vixen finally comes on stage to preform a dance number, which the crowd goes wild for, and the computer scores highly. Next it's time for Crow to come on stage, everybody laughs at her silly appearance as she struggles to come up with things to say, yet the computer scores her so high it almost blows up, all because her mother rigged it. At first she is over joyed to have succeeded, but when she learns of how it happened, she angrily storms out.

Outside is the Vixen, whose heartbroken over having lost, the crow feels horrible about this, and decides to come clean, telling her all about what her mother did, and gives her the crown, saying that she received it undeservedly. The crow then cries, wishing she could be like the Vixen.

Everything is set right and as a way of saying thank you, while the Vixen becomes Miss New Year, Little Crow gets to become Miss Honesty. That's when somebody notices something, the so called computer is really a washing machine, so maybe this whole thing wasn't so intelligently scored in the first place. The Raven, while claiming to be the one who knows the most about computers is, of course, the only one who doesn't realize that.

Notes[]

  • While the film has no official release in America, it has been subtitled online, albeit rather poorly. The YouTube channel, Eli J. Brony, also features an English fandub.
