Here Comes Peter Cottontail: The Movie

Peter Cottontail is the main protagonist of the Rankin/Bass Easter special Here Comes Peter Cottontail. He is an anthropomorphic rabbit who lives in April Valley. He is boastful and irresponsible and whenever he tells a fib, his left ear droops in a manner similar to Pinocchio.

Appearances in Easter specials[]

In the original special, Peter was chosen by Colonal Wellington B. Bunny to be his successor as the Chief Easter Bunny before he retires despite Peter's flaws. January Q. Irontail approaches the two proposed a contest; whoever delivers the most Easter eggs becomes the new chief Easter bunny. Unbeknownst to them, Irontail just wanted to be chief in order to make the holiday miserable for all children due to the loss of his original cottontail. After partying all night to celebrate, Peter set his alarm clock for 5:30 AM to fulfill his promise. Irontail, however, sabotaged the plan by feeding his rooster with bubble gum. Due to fact that the crowing was heard far in the sky after the bubbles popped, Peter slept all Easter while Irontail managed to deliver only one egg and became the new chief. Ashamed of what happened, Peter left April Valley with his basket of eggs vowing to make it up to everyone. He stumbled upon Seymour S. Sassafras (the narrator of the special) and was given his Yestermorrowbile that can take him along with the pilot Antione back to Easter and deliver the eggs. Irontail find out about the plan and sends his spider to sabotage the machine so it will take them to any holiday except Easter. Since the rules never said that the eggs should only be delivered on Easter, Peter tried to give them on Mother's Day, 4th of July, Halloween, and Thanksgiving, but to no avail due to his habit of fibbing, Irontail, and other things. On Christmas, he meets up with an Easter hat named Bonnie Bonnet and while making a deal with the shop owner to trade his eggs for Bonnie, Irontail grabs the eggs and flies away, but he crashes into Santa's sleigh. While taking Bonnie with him to get the eggs back, Peter accidentally leaves Antione behind. After Santa gives him back the eggs, Peter continues his quest without Antione. He was unable to land on New Year's Day because he never learned how to stop the Yestermorrowbile. Bonnie eventually showed him the Stop button and they land on Valentine's Day. Peter soon meets and fell in love with a female bunny named Donna and while they are skating, Irontail uses dark magic and turns Peter's eggs green. After unsuccessfully trying to deliver the green eggs on President's Day due to fibbing, Peter regrets letting his habit get in the way of his mission. After some encouragement from Seymour through the song "In The Puzzle of Life", Peter promises to be more honest and responsible and quickly learns there is one holiday that accepts green; St. Patrick's Day. After finally successfully delivering the green eggs on that holiday, Peter returned to April Valley and was appointed by Colonel Bunny to the be the new Chief Easter Bunny while Irontail was demoted to janitor for his actions.

In the 2005 Classic Media produced direct to video sequel Here Comes Peter Cottontail: The Movie, Peter is shown to be married to a wife named Mama Cottontail (implied to be Donna from the original special) and has a son named Junior. Although Casey Kasem was alive at the time the movie was made, he was unavailable to reprise his role, and voice actor Tom Kenny was brought in to voice.
